Meet the cast of The Carpenters: Voice of the Heart

Ahead of The Carpenters: Voice of the Heart coming to Haverhill Arts Centre on Saturday 14 September, we spoke to the cast about their history in music and theatre.

Carole Gordon – vocalist

Carole Gordon and her late partner Bob Newman have been making music for many years. In their early career together they toured with Tammy Wynette both in the UK and America and have been voted ‘Top British Duo’ by the British County Music Association.

They have also enjoyed success in the USA when they represented Great Britain in Nashville, Tennessee. Two of their four albums have received ‘Top British Recording’ by the press. Successful appearances on TV saw them featured on BBC Breakfast Time in an interview all about their Nashville trip and countless other appearances on BBC 2’s Sing Country, which showed the talented pair on the Wembley stage alongside many star names.

Bob produced the original production of Forever In Blue Jeans and will always have a massive influence on the show. Carole continues to lead the company and joins the frontline singers with energetic song and dance.

Dave Sheriff – backing vocals

Dave made his debut with the show in 2023. Always a busy performer, he tours nationwide as a popular solo artist and has previously held Guinness World Records for most hours playing and singing, plus for the most instruments played at once.

A fine composer with many of his songs being recorded by Country artists both in Britain, Ireland and the USA.

Rachel Cantrill – backing vocals

Rachel has been performing professionally in theatre since the age of 18. Her wonderful vocals and acting ability, fused with her bubbly personality, have made her very popular with audiences around the country.

Theatre credits include: Forever In Blue Jeans (UK & International Tour), Karen Carpenter – Voice of the Heart (UK Tour), Smart Alec Productions (UK Tour), We’ll Meet Again (UK Tour), Casper the Musical (Shaftesbury Theatre) and many more.

Martyn Cooper – musical director/arranger/piano/keyboards

Martyn has been a professional musician for over 25 years. His experience ranges from playing piano/keyboards (theatre tours, cruising, summer seasons, studio sessions, television and radio) to musical director, as well as writing and producing original shows for cruise ships, theatre tours and corporate events around the UK and Europe.

Other touring credits include: ‘Dead Ringer from Hell’, ’Rock ‘n’ Laughter’, ’One Night in Vegas’ and various concerts with the British Philharmonic Orchestra. Martyn has played keyboards in theatre productions such as ‘High Society’, ‘Annie’ and ‘West Side Story’, and has musically directed and arranged 22 pantomimes across the UK. His TV appearances include LWT, Meridian, Anglia and Spanish Television and BBC Radio sessions.

Also featuring: Graham Walker – lead guitar & vocals
