“The power of the Sun and Wind are there for everyone, not owned by big companies, not blockaded by hostile powers. It can be ours and that’s why it’ll win.”
Broadcaster and author Tom Heap lays out a reset to the climate message: it can now be selfish, not selfless. It doesn’t even need to be about climate, just cost.
“Houses have solar panels, villages own wind turbines and countries harness the elements that bless their land. ‘Going Green’ is portrayed as pricey medicine administered from above – something done to you. But it can and should be done with you. And now that works.”
Tom, is known for presenting BBC’s Countryfile, Radio 4’s Rare Earth, and Sky News’ The Climate Show.
“I’ve spent my career examining how we successfully co-exist with our planet and this is the most exhilarating moment. Even before the war with Iran, solar power was growing faster than all other energy technologies across history. That’s now been supercharged. And, coupled with wind, is about to deliver a benign electric shock.”
We have to stop burning stuff and now we have the way.
“Fossil fuels haven’t just made us an enemy of the natural world, they’ve made us enemies of each other: demonstrated clearly over the last 150 years and the last few months. War is fuelled by oil and gas because they are our lifeblood and that lifeblood is limited, located and owned. It’s time for a transfusion. You can’t cage the wind. Sunlight isn’t held up in the Strait of Hormuz.”
Tom will bust media peddled myths about the cost of green energy, the unpopularity of climate action, the role of China and the unshakeable dominance of fossil fuels. But he’ll also aim a couple of swipes at dogmatic environmentalists.
And stand by for surprises: Tom has something akin to an oil well and refinery in his garage, wood is stronger than steel, greet the dawn of the new industrial sunbelt and meet a local hero.
