Meet The Cast of There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly: Steven Lee
With opening night just a few weeks away, we caught up with Steven Lee from The People’s Theatre Company who will be playing Nambang, the spaceship captain, in There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly on Wednesday 10 April.
This enchanting show will re-tell the famous nursery rhyme with live action, animation and puppetry. Ahead of opening night, Steven recalls what made him fall in love with the tale and what you can expect on the 50th anniversary of Pam Adams’ best-selling book.
Where did the idea for the show come from?
The story is unique in that it’s been loved by generations. Our children love it when we read it to them just as we loved it when our parents read it to us, making it one of the few things that grandparents, parents and kids can all genuinely enjoy together. As a company that specialises in making magical experiences for families to share together that was very appealing.
Do you have a personal connection to the nursery rhyme?
My son was a baby when I wrote the show and it was one of his favourites.
Who is your favourite character in the play?
I play Nambang, the hapless but occasionally heroic spaceship captain in the show, so I have a soft spot for him. But I think his genius alien colleague, Dr Goosehandle is probably my favourite.
What can people watching the show expect to see?
The story they love with some charming and extremely funny new bits. But above all, huge oodles of adorable fun!
Can I join in and shout along with the fun?
You can – and you must! You see, Captain Nambang’s spaceship is fuelled by stories so without your help he’s never getting home!
